About CB6

Join the Board

There are two types of CB6 membership: Full membership and public membership. While both membership types are a significant time commitment, public membership demands slightly less time. Before you apply for either type of membership, please keep your schedule in mind. Before you apply for either type of membership, you are strongly urged to attend several meetings first.

Full CB6 Membership

The Manhattan Borough President’s office accepts applications for full Community Board membership. New Yorkers living, working, or studying in Community District 6 are encouraged to apply. Community Boards are pivotal in shaping their communities, and they work to enhance and preserve the character of their neighborhoods.

Applications for the 2024-2026 term are closed. Check back in late 2024 or early 2025 for information on applications for the 2025-2027 term.

Public Membership

Applications for Public Membership are submitted directly to Manhattan Community Board Six. Public Members are appointed to serve on one committee, providing expertise in a specific area and allowing the board to have working participation from a broader representation within Community District 6.

The number of Public Members is limited by our bylaws and by the needs of each committee. On the committee to which they are appointed, Public Members enjoy full voting privileges as a member of their committee and count towards quorum. Therefore, a Public Member must commit to full participation in their assigned committee. Public Members, however, do not participate in the full board meetings as members and are not required to attend those meetings. Like full Board Members, Public Members must live or work within Community District 6 or have a significant interest within the district. Public Members must abide by CB6’s bylaws, as well. Please also remember that while all members might bring specific concerns as a resident of a neighborhood or members of a civic organization, members represent the entire district and not any other organization to which they may belong.

If you are interested in becoming a Public Member, please fill out the application below. Existing public members get their own reapplication forms when it is time for them to reapply. Note: You can only attach one document using the form below. Please note that no application for Public Membership will be considered unless the applicant has attended at least three meetings of their desired committee in the last six months.

Applications for public membership are accepted on a rolling basis, and appointments are made as need arises. If your application does not result in a committee appointment within 6 months of submission, your application will be closed. We receive many more applications than we have available membership spots, so do not be discouraged if your application is not successful. All Community Board meetings are open for the public to come and observe. At some meetings, there are opportunities for public comment, so one needn’t be a formal public member in order to participate in Community Board Six meetings.
