The Manhattan Borough President’s office accepts applications for Community Board membership from around November to January every year. New Yorkers living, working, or studying in Community District 6 are encouraged to apply. Community Boards are pivotal in shaping their communities and they work to enhance and preserve the character of their neighborhoods.
Thank you for your interest in being a Public Member of Manhattan Community Board Six (CB6). Public Members are valued members of our board. They provide expertise in specific areas and allow the board to have working participation from a broader representation within Community District 6.
The Chair of the Board appoints Public Members each year for a one-year term. The number of Public Members is limited by our bylaws. In the committee to which they are appointed, they enjoy full voting privileges as a member of their committee and are counted in the quorum necessary to vote. Therefore, a Public Member must commit to full participation in their assigned committee. Public Members, however, do not participate in the full board meetings as members and are not required to attend those meetings. Like Board Members, Public Members must live or work within Community District 6 or have a significant interest within the district. Public Members must abide by CB6’s bylaws, as well. Please also remember that while all members might bring specific concerns as a resident of a neighborhood or members of a civic organization, members represent the entire district and not any other organization to which they may belong. The Chair of the Board may remove a Public Member at any time for poor attendance or other cause. Reappointment after a one-year term is possible but not guaranteed.
If you are interested in becoming a Public Member, or if you wish to reapply for another one-year term, please fill out the application on this page. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Board Office.
We greatly appreciate your willingness to serve.
